The expertise of the Committee ranges from political issues, such as the regulation of dentistry and oral health promotion, to clinical issues such as cross infection control, orthodontics and restorative dentistry. The Committee includes cross representation with the BDA’s Dental Public Health Committee (DPHC) and has a representative from Cochrane UK.

Our priorities

Our core priority is the consideration of matters of scientific importance that may have relevance to dentistry and oral health. This may include but is not limited to issues surrounding oral health promotion, the science of dental materials, new developments from the dental research community, the control of infection within the dental operating area and oral disease processes.

The Committee has provided scientific input into several BDA campaigns and resources, including calls for radical action to lower the nation’s sugar intake and removal of misleading marketing claims by children’s food manufacturers, supporting the development of the oral cancer toolkit with CRUK, and working alongside the Council of European Dentists to avoid a full ban on dental amalgam.
